Was there ever a place more serene than this? Here we stand before the magnificent Lady Buddha statue in Da Nang. It’s a sight that truly embodies peace and compassion. The Lady Buddha, also known as the Goddess of Mercy, gazes serenely over the East Vietnam Sea. At 67 meters tall, equivalent to a 30-story building, she is the tallest Buddha statue in Vietnam. This incredible statue isn’t just a statue. It’s also a temple. Inside, seventeen floors house twenty-seven Buddha statues each. This creates a “Buddha within a Buddha” experience, showcasing the depth of devotion here. Local fishermen revere Lady Buddha as their protector. They offer prayers to her before venturing out to sea, seeking her blessings for a safe and prosperous journey. A local myth adds to the mystique of this place. During the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, a Buddha statue mysteriously drifted ashore to the Son Tra Peninsula. This event was seen as a divine sign, and the area became known as Bai But, “The land of Buddha.” This led to the construction of the Linh Ung Pagoda, alongside the Lady Buddha statue, between 2004 and 2010. The pagoda and statue together form a powerful symbol of peace and prosperity. The location of the Linh Ung Pagoda and the Lady Buddha statue isn’t accidental. They are strategically placed on Son Tra Peninsula, about 10 kilometers northeast of Da Nang city center. This creates a symbolic triangle with two other Linh Ung Pagodas in the region. Locals believe this triangle protects them from negative energies. As you admire the Lady Buddha, take a moment to appreciate the eighteen Arhat statues that line the path to the main temple. Their expressive faces and unique poses add another layer of artistry to this spiritual site. The Lady Buddha of Da Nang is more than just a tourist attraction.
