Did you know that Flensburg was once the final seat of the Third Reich? Imagine standing right here in Flensburg a city steeped in history a place where Danish and German cultures intertwine. Flensburg is Germany’s northernmost large city a bustling port at the head of Flensburg Fjord. It’s a city with a rich and often turbulent past.

Founded by Danish settlers around 1200 Flensburg’s town rights were confirmed in 1284. It quickly became a significant trading hub in the Duchy of Schleswig. Unlike Holstein Schleswig wasn’t part of the Holy Roman Empire. This meant Flensburg wasn’t in the Hanseatic League but maintained strong ties to it. The city thrived particularly thanks to its herring fisheries. Kippered herring was exported all over Europe. This fueled Flensburg’s medieval trade boom.

Life wasn’t always easy for the average Flensburger. The streets were unpaved and unlit at night. Bad weather was also a constant threat. Storm tides regularly plagued the town. The Great Fire of 1485 further tested its resilience. Despite these hardships Flensburg’s trade flourished. It expanded into sugar and whale oil after the decline of the Hanseatic League. The 18th century saw another boom thanks to its rum trade using cane sugar imported from the Danish West Indies.

Then came 1864. After the Second Schleswig War Flensburg became Prussian then German. The city’s predominantly Danish population shifted. German immigration and the replacement of Danish bureaucrats led to a gradual change in demographics. However a sizable Danish community remains to this day. You can still see evidence of that Danish heritage in many surnames and in the city’s vibrant Danish culture.

In the 20th century Flensburg played a significant role during World War II. Though largely spared from bombing the city was the site of the Flensburg Government. Admiral Karl Dönitz briefly led the remnants of the Nazi regime here after Hitler’s death. This lasted only a short time until the British arrested Dönitz and his ministers at the Naval Academy in Mürwik. This marked the final chapter of the Third Reich.
