Right here stands a tribute to a true animation giant. This is Isadore Friz Freleng. He was an American animator, cartoonist, director, producer, and composer. Freleng left an indelible mark on the world of animation.
Isadore Freleng was born in Kansas City. He began his animation career at United Film Ad Service. Later, Freleng moved to California. He joined Walt Disney Studios in 1927.
Working alongside Ub Iwerks, Freleng contributed to the Alice Comedies. He also worked on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons. Despite early promise, Freleng’s time at Disney was short-lived. He clashed with Walt Disney and returned to Kansas City.
Teaming up with Hugh Harman and Ising, Freleng ventured to create their own studio. They created a Mickey Mouse-like character named Bosko. The character was eventually sold to Leon Schlesinger. He produced the series for Warner Bros.
Freleng became a prominent animator on Looney Tunes. He eventually assumed co-directorial duties. In 1933, Harman and Ising left Schlesinger’s employ. Freleng became Schlesinger’s top director.
Freleng introduced Porky Pig. He directed many high-budget Merrie Melodies shorts. He gained a reputation as a tough taskmaster. His unit consistently produced high-quality animated shorts.
Freleng briefly left Warner Bros. in 1937. He directed for the new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio. Freleng returned to Warner Bros. in 1939. He directed one of his first Looney Tunes cartoon shorts. It was You Ought to Be in Pictures.
Schlesinger allowed Freleng and his fellow directors almost complete creative control. Freleng’s style matured. He became a master of comic timing. He also introduced or redesigned many Warner characters. Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, Tweety, and Speedy Gonzales owe their existence to him.
Freleng and Chuck Jones dominated the Warner Bros. studio after World War II. Freleng concentrated on Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, Tweety, and Speedy Gonzales. Freleng won four Oscars during his time at Warner Bros. He won for Tweetie Pie, Speedy Gonzales, Birds Anonymous, and Knighty Knight Bugs.
He was a classically trained violinist. Freleng timed his cartoons on musical bar sheets. He timed gags to utilize music effectively. Every cartoon Freleng directed from the late 1930s to 1963 was made with his creative musical technique.
Warner Bros. Cartoons closed in 1963. Freleng formed DePatie-Freleng Enterprises with David H. DePatie. They created The Pink Panther for the feature film. The Pink Panther cartoon character became popular. The character got its own series of cartoons.
DePatie-Freleng also produced other original cartoon series. They created The Inspector, The Ant and the Aardvark, and Tijuana Toads. In 1980, they sold DePatie-Freleng to Marvel Comics. It was renamed Marvel Productions.
Freleng later served as an executive producer on three Looney Tunes compilation features. In 1986, Freleng stepped down from his position at Warner Bros.
Freleng was honored with a Lifetime Achievement of Excellence in Animation award. It has since been referred to as the Friz Award. On May 26, 1995, Friz Freleng died of natural causes in Los Angeles. He was 89 years old.
Freleng’s legacy lives on through his timeless cartoons. He entertained generations. He continues to inspire animators and artists today. Freleng was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
