A brook whispers secrets through the heart of this campus. Welcome to Forest Brook High School. Once a vibrant hub for students grades nine through twelve it now stands as a testament to a rich history. Forest Brook High was part of the North Forest Independent School District. It opened its doors in 1972. This was to accommodate Black students after the district faced pressure to integrate.
The school faced challenges. In 2001 Tropical Storm Allison struck. The storm caused significant damage. Students were temporarily relocated to B. C. Elmore Middle School. Repair work was extensive. The school’s rivalry with M. B. Smiley High was a concern. Officials worried that combining students might cause problems. Residents protested these plans.
Tragedy struck in 2007. Teenagers vandalized the school. They left a water hose running for hours. This resulted in significant damage. The library and many rooms were affected. The vandalism led to a temporary merger with Smiley. This decision was met with criticism. Fears of clashes between students arose. Two former students were arrested. One faced felony charges for the vandalism.
Forest Brook was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a breeding ground for talent. Jason Bourgeois a prominent baseball player attended the school. So did Willie D a renowned rapper. The school’s football team boasted stars like Cornelius Brown and Johnny Jolly.
Academically Forest Brook faced struggles. In 2007 Johns Hopkins University labeled it a “dropout factory”. This meant that a large percentage of freshmen didn’t graduate. The school also faced accusations of cheating. The situation was complex. The introduction of TEA monitors ironically led to lower test scores.
The school finally closed. It merged with Smiley High School. The new school was named North Forest High School. The original Forest Brook campus became Forest Brook Middle School. The site lives on though its purpose has changed. A brook still flows through the grounds. It serves as a silent witness to the school’s legacy.
