What if these ancient stones could talk? What tales of bravery and despair would they whisper? Right before us stands Puente Uchumayo, a bridge seemingly frozen in time. It has silently witnessed centuries of Arequipa’s history unfold. Puente Uchumayo, also known as Puente del Diablo, the Devil’s Bridge, whispers of a tumultuous past. Construction began in 1604, commissioned to connect the agricultural heartland of the valley with the bustling city. Imagine farmers guiding their llama trains laden with produce, their footsteps echoing on these very stones. For years, Puente Uchumayo was a lifeline for the local communities, binding them to the city’s fate. But its story takes a dark turn. On February 4th, 1836, the bridge became a battleground. Peruvian forces, led by Felipe Santiago Salaverry, clashed with the Bolivian army under Andrés de Santa Cruz. Legend has it that as the Bolivian troops attempted to cross, a chasm ripped through the earth, swallowing their artillery and men. The cries of “Puente maldito, puente del diablo!”, cursed bridge, devil’s bridge, echoed through the valley, forever branding it with its sinister name. Despite its turbulent past, Puente Uchumayo still stands. It serves as a poignant reminder of the battles fought and the lives lost on its timeworn stones. The bridge, meticulously restored in 2016, now stands as a testament to Arequipa’s enduring spirit. It invites us to reflect on the echoes of the past as we cross its threshold into the future.
