Two shots rang out, shattering the quiet of a February night in 1993. This tragic event led to the renaming of West Park in Compton to Burrell-MacDonald Park. We stand now at this very park, a place of recreation transformed into a memorial. Burrell-MacDonald Park honors two fallen Compton police officers: Officer Kevin Michael Burrell, 29, and Reserve Officer James Wayne MacDonald, 23. They were killed during a routine traffic stop on Alondra Boulevard, not far from here. The crime shook the community, prompting a massive manhunt and a $35,000 reward. While a suspect was arrested for an unrelated homicide, the search for the killers of Burrell and MacDonald continued. Today, Burrell-MacDonald Park, located at Alondra Boulevard and Wadsworth Avenue, serves as a reminder of their sacrifice. The park, with its baseball fields, children’s play areas, and community center, offers a space for families and the community to come together. It’s a place where laughter and play mingle with the quiet remembrance of two officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Burrell-MacDonald Park stands as a testament to their service and a symbol of the community’s resilience.
