In 1931, a striking Art Deco edifice arose on Jamaica Avenue. This was the J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building. It served as a retail location for the Kurtz Company. The J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building stands as a testament to the company’s success. They had three other stores in New York City at the time. The building’s design aimed to project a powerful image of the Kurtz Company. Its Art Deco style made it a standout in Queens. The Kurtz Company thrived in this location for decades. In 1978, the company sold the J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building to other retailers. However, the building’s legacy continued. It earned recognition as a New York City Landmark in 1981. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building has housed various businesses over the years. This includes a Children’s Place franchise and local shops. It even housed an office for the New York City Department of Probation. Today, the J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building remains a prominent landmark on Jamaica Avenue. It stands as a reminder of the Kurtz Company’s history and the enduring appeal of Art Deco architecture.
