Presenting itself as a silent sentinel on Pulkovo Heights is the Large Pulkovo Radio Telescope. We are standing before a testament to Russia’s enduring quest to understand the cosmos. This isn’t just any telescope. It is a window into the universe.
The Large Pulkovo Radio Telescope resides 19 km south of St. Petersburg. It stands on Pulkovo Heights. These heights rise about 75 meters above sea level. The location is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site is the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg.
Pulkovo Observatory has operated since 1839. It belongs to the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the time of its construction, it was equipped with advanced tools. These tools were vital for navigation development. They also helped determine time accurately.
Before 1917, the meridian passing through the main building served as a longitude reference. Different countries had used their own meridians. This created map confusion. They then agreed to use the Greenwich meridian. Old maps still show the Pulkovo meridian system.
Today, the Large Pulkovo Radio Telescope stands here. It is a prototype. The world’s largest telescope in Nizhny Arkhyz was based on it. The observatory also houses a large solar telescope. It is called the ACU-5.
The Pulkovo Observatory operates other stations. One is a mountain station near Kislovodsk. Another telescope is at Campo Imperatore in Italy. A third is at Svetloye Observatory.
Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve was the observatory’s first director. He was appointed in 1839. Struve was a German Russian astronomer. In 1861, his son Otto Wilhelm von Struve succeeded him. The architect was Alexander Bryullov.
Originally, the observatory boasted state-of-the-art devices. A 15-inch aperture refractor was one of the largest at the time. In 1885, a 30-inch refractor was added. It remained the biggest until Lick Observatory’s 36-inch telescope opened.
The observatory determined star coordinates. It studied astronomical constants. These included precession and aberration. They discovered and measured double stars. The observatory aided geographical studies within Russia. It contributed to navigation development. Star catalogues pinpointed the positions of many stars.
By its 50th anniversary, an astrophysical laboratory was built. It included a mechanical workshop. Europe’s largest refractor was installed. Feodor Bredikhin became director in 1890. Astrophysical research gained momentum. Aristarkh Belopolsky joined from Moscow Observatory. He was an expert in solar research.
A big Littrow spectrograph was installed in 1923. A horizontal solar telescope followed in 1940. The observatory began astrophotography in 1894. In 1927, astronomers catalogued stars in near-polar areas. Regular celestial pole movement observations began in 1904. In 1920, the observatory transmitted exact time signals by radio.
During the siege of Leningrad, the observatory was destroyed. It suffered fierce air raids. The main instruments were saved. They were stored safely. This included the 30-inch refractor lens. A significant part of the library was also saved.
The Soviet government decided to restore the observatory. Construction started in 1946. In May 1954, the observatory reopened. It was expanded. New departments were created. These included Radio Astronomy.
New instruments were installed. These included a 26-inch refractor. A horizontal meridian device was added. There was also a big radio telescope. A 65 cm Zeiss refractor was meant for Benito Mussolini. Instead, the Soviet Union recovered it.
Under Semyon Khaikin’s leadership, the Large Pulkovo Radio Telescope was constructed. It stands as a beacon of scientific endeavor. It shows Russia’s commitment to exploring the universe’s mysteries.
