Picture this a quaint fieldstone church nestled in Northeast Philadelphia. This is Pennepack Baptist Church a place steeped in history.
Founded in 1688 Pennepack Baptist is the oldest Baptist church in Pennsylvania. It’s also the seventh oldest in the United States. Think about that for a moment. This building has witnessed over three centuries of history. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring power of community.
Imagine twelve Welsh Baptists arriving in Philadelphia in 1683. They sought religious freedom. William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” promised just that. These pioneers settled near Pennypack Creek. They held their first services along the creek’s edge. It’s said they even used the creek itself for baptisms. A Baptismal Rock a quarter mile from the church still marks this sacred spot.
For nearly 20 years the congregation met in members’ homes. Then in 1707 they built their first church. That same year they formed the Philadelphia Baptist Association. This was the first Baptist association in the New World a significant milestone. The original church building was expanded in 1774. The present building a fieldstone marvel dates back to 1805.
Pennepack Baptist boasts a rich legacy. Reverend Samuel Jones served as pastor for an astounding 51 years from 1762 to 1814. He was an early University of Pennsylvania graduate and helped found Brown University. Ebenezer Kinnersley a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and colleague of Benjamin Franklin was also connected to the church. Several Revolutionary War veterans including Dr Enoch Edwards George Washington’s physician are buried in the church cemetery. The Holme family for whom Holmesburg is named were also members.
In 1885 the congregation built a new church about a mile away. However in 2006 they returned to their historic 1805 building. They remain there today. Today Pennepack Baptist may have a smaller congregation but its spirit and legacy endure. The church continues to serve as a center for faith community and the preservation of local history. The Pennepack Baptist Historical Foundation actively works to preserve this remarkable place.
