Silently guarding the mouth of the Douro River, stands the Farol do Molhe Sul da Barra do Douro. This lighthouse marks the spot where the river meets the vast Atlantic Ocean. The Farol do Molhe Sul is also known as the Felgueiras Lighthouse. Its story is one of maritime challenges overcome. It is a beacon of hope guiding ships safely into Porto.

Before the 19th century, sailing up the Douro River to Porto was dangerous. The river’s mouth often became clogged with silt. This made navigation tricky and led to many shipwrecks. To solve this, construction began on a mole or jetty on the river’s right bank in 1790. This was the first step in making the waterway safer. More work followed in 1867.

The Farol do Molhe Sul was built in 1886. It was fitted with a gas-fired light and a bell. These improvements helped sailors navigate the tricky waters. In 1916, the lighthouse was upgraded. Further changes were made in 1945. By 1955, it had a powerful lens that emitted a red flash every five seconds. The light could be seen from 9 nautical miles away.

Automation came to the Farol do Molhe Sul in 1979. It was controlled remotely from the Leça Lighthouse. This was a few miles to the north. The lighthouse was deactivated on March 31, 2009. However, its foghorn remained in use.

But the story of the Farol do Molhe Sul doesn’t end there. Because of its historical importance, it was decided to bring it back to life. The lighthouse was re-opened on December 13, 2021. It continues to stand as a symbol of Porto’s maritime heritage.

The structure of the Farol do Molhe Sul is also interesting. It is a hexagonal tower built of exposed granite masonry. It has a red balcony and lantern. Next to the tower is a small white building with plastered walls. The lighthouse stands 10 meters tall. Its light has a focal height of 17 meters.

Interestingly, the lighthouse has inspired artists. In 2024, the band Khruangbin released a song about it. The song appears on their album A La Sala. The band visited Porto in 2022 for the Primavera Sound Porto music festival.

The Farol de Felgueiras is more than just a lighthouse. It is a testament to human ingenuity. It represents the ongoing effort to master the forces of nature. It is a beacon that has stood the test of time. As you stand here, remember the countless ships it has guided. Think of the sailors who relied on its light. The Farol do Molhe Sul da Barra do Douro remains an enduring symbol of Porto.
