“If you forget my death, I died in vain.” These words echo as we stand before the Charlestown Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This memorial stands as a testament to sacrifice. It honors six local men from Charlestown who perished in the Vietnam War.

The Charlestown Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in April 2009. It is located outside Veterans Memorial Hall in Charlestown. This location provides a place for reflection. It allows the community to remember these brave souls.

Let’s consider the broader context of Vietnam War memorials. The South Boston Vietnam Memorial was among America’s first. It predated the national memorial in Washington, D.C., by 13 months.

The South Boston memorial honors 25 men. These men hailed from South Boston who lost their lives in the war. South Boston suffered greatly. It had one of the highest casualty rates for a community of its size.

The idea for the South Boston monument arose from a memorial mass. Friends remembered three friends killed in 1968. These men were part of a group of six friends. They had joined the military together. The surviving friends wanted to honor all the fallen from their community. They raised $45,000 within a year. The City of Boston donated $30,000. Harry Carrol designed the memorial. It was dedicated on September 13, 1981.

Each year, a rededication ceremony occurs in the fall. The Marine Corps Marching Band performs. The Silent Drill team also participates.

The Charlestown Vietnam Veterans Memorial reminds us of the cost of war. It reminds us of the importance of community. It also ensures that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
