Wasn’t it faith that moved mountains? Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church stands as a testament to that very belief. Right here on Brook Street and Greyrock Place in Stamford Connecticut this wasn’t always the case. Founded in April 1946 by Reverend William Lee Baxter from South Carolina Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church had humble beginnings. Initially worship services were held in the Elks Hall. The name itself is significant. “Faith” represents God’s reward for unwavering belief. “Tabernacle” signifies a gathering place for the Lord’s message. “Baptist” honors John the Baptist Jesus Christ’s precursor.

The congregation’s first challenge was acquiring a permanent building. They needed $10000 for a down payment. Within 30 days through generous contributions they raised the needed funds. This incredible feat showcases their powerful collective faith. Imagine the joy when on Mother’s Day 1946 they assembled for their first service in their new home a former Ukrainian Pentecostal Church. The congregation sang “Free at last Thank God Almighty we are Free at Last” a powerful moment reflecting their journey.

The church quickly flourished growing from 300 to over 700 members in a single year. Over 200 new members joined through water baptism. They raised $25000 that first year an extraordinary amount. Reverend Baxter’s leadership extended beyond spiritual guidance. He established a credit union in 1956 a testament to his commitment to the community’s well-being. Later Reverend Dr Rafe M Taylor Reverend Samuel L White and Reverend Dr Tommie Jackson each added their unique contributions to the church’s rich history. They oversaw expansions building projects and community outreach initiatives.

Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a beacon of hope. It provided housing assistance through projects like New Hope Towers and Coleman Towers. They established a daycare center and a food program. They championed social justice and inclusion. They offered scholarships and college tours. They continue to serve their community and beyond extending their reach globally. The church’s commitment to its community’s needs is truly commendable.

Today Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church continues to thrive. It is a place of spiritual growth and community engagement. It reflects the enduring power of faith perseverance and collective action. Their story is a powerful reminder that with faith even the most ambitious goals can be achieved. Their dedication to their faith and to their community is an inspiration to all. Remember their story as you leave. Let their example of unwavering faith inspire you.
