What makes a building more than just bricks and mortar? Look around you at the Ipswich City Uniting Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest building in Queensland that has been continuously used as a church. The Ipswich City Uniting Church, formerly known as Ipswich Central Methodist Church, first opened its doors in 1858. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. The first service in Ipswich, then known as “Limestone”, was held on January 28, 1848. The congregation grew, and a simple timber chapel was built in July 1849. This beautiful building replaced that first timber structure. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of Ipswich.
