Didn’t you wonder what stories lie within the walls of the Aslanhane Mosque? This magnificent structure stands as one of Turkey’s oldest mosques. It still stands proudly in Ankara.

The Aslanhane Mosque’s history stretches back to 1290. It was a time when Mesud II ruled the Anatolian Seljuks. Ebubekir Mehmet was the architect. He shaped the mosque’s destiny. Two Ahi leaders, Hüsamettin and Hasaneddin, commissioned it.

However, its story does not end there. In 1330, another Ahi leader named Şerafettin stepped in. He repaired the mosque. The mosque was named after him. The Aslanhane Mosque underwent several minor repairs. The Directorate General of Foundations restored it between 2010 and 2013.

The Aslanhane Mosque is not just a place of worship. It is a testament to time. Its square plan covers 400 square meters. A single minaret graces the skyline. Inside, 24 large wooden columns support the wooden roof. Three gates welcome visitors. Twelve windows allow light to filter through. The mihrab showcases Seljuk tiles. Most of the building material comes from earlier buildings.

Şerafettin’s tomb faces the mosque. Legend says a lion statue was buried in the walls. That is why people call it Aslanhane. It means the house of the lion.

Imagine the echoes of prayers within these walls. Picture the Ahi leaders shaping the mosque’s destiny. Feel the weight of history in every stone and tile. The Aslanhane Mosque invites us to connect with the past. It connects us with the stories of faith and craftsmanship.
