Beyond the bustling streets of Madrid lies a hidden gem. Bellas Vistas, a neighborhood steeped in history and brimming with life. Bellas Vistas’s story begins in the aftermath of the African War of 1859-1860. General Leopoldo O’Donnell’s victorious army camped north of Madrid, in the fields of Amaniel. They awaited a grand entrance into the capital, an entrance that never materialized. This temporary camp slowly transformed into a permanent settlement. Merchants set up shop. The area was renamed Tetuán de las Victorias, after the Moroccan city of Tetouan. This name acknowledged the soldiers’ origins and the victory they represented. The Bellas Vistas neighborhood became part of the district of Tetuán. This district also includes Almenara, Berruguete, Castillejos, Cuatro Caminos, and Valdeacederas. Bellas Vistas occupies a modest 0.72 square kilometers. Yet, as of 2020, nearly 30,000 people call this vibrant neighborhood home. Bellas Vistas’s irregular street layout reflects the area’s complex topography. The narrow streets, often difficult to navigate, wind their way through the neighborhood. Key streets include Pamplona, originally intended to connect Avenida del General Perón with Carretera de La Dehesa de la Villa. Jerónima Llorente intersects Pamplona, linking Francos Rodríguez and Doctor Federico Rubio y Gali. The latter meanders parallel to Pablo Iglesias. Almansa, Alvarado, and Castilla streets form the heart of Bellas Vistas’s commercial activity. Even literary giants have acknowledged Bellas Vistas. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s 1905 novel, *La horda*, mentions the neighborhood, portraying the lives of ragpickers who came from Bellas Vistas and Tetuán to scavenge through the city. Today, Bellas Vistas is a culturally diverse area. A significant immigrant population adds to the area’s dynamic and evolving character. This rich history and the vibrant community create a neighborhood full of contrasts and unique charm. Bellas Vistas awaits, inviting you to discover its hidden stories and experience its unique character.
