Across the shimmering Han River, the Han Swinging Bridge beckons. The Han Swinging Bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It’s the beating heart of Da Nang, a symbol of this city’s progress and resilience. The Han River Bridge, as it’s often called, wasn’t just handed to Da Nang. After the liberation of Vietnam, the city had only one bridge. It struggled to meet the growing transportation needs. The people of Da Nang yearned for another connection, a way to bridge the gap between the bustling city center and the quieter neighboring areas. The government listened. In February 1998, construction began on the Han River Bridge. Just two years later, in 2000, the bridge was inaugurated, a testament to Vietnamese ingenuity. It was the first swing bridge in Vietnam, designed by local architects and built with the help of the very people it would serve. The Han Swinging Bridge stretches an impressive 487.7 meters long and 12.9 meters wide, comprised of eleven spans, each 33 meters long. This bridge isn’t just a way to get from one side of the river to the other. It’s a nightly spectacle. Every night, the center span of the Han Swinging Bridge pivots a full 90 degrees. This allows large ships to navigate the river. This rotation usually happens at 1 am, lasting until about 3:30 am. But on weekends, the show starts earlier, at 11 pm, allowing more people to witness this unique event. Imagine standing here as the city lights twinkle and reflect on the water. The Han Swinging Bridge begins its graceful rotation. It truly feels like Da Nang is a city on the move, constantly evolving and reaching for new horizons. The bridge is a “Work of typical quality,” a title bestowed upon it between 2001 and 2005. It’s a source of pride for Da Nang, a symbol of connection and innovation. It embodies the spirit of a city that built its own future, span by span.
