Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Here at the Dentomachi Residence formerly the Tsurumaki Clinic you can. This unassuming two-story wooden building whispers stories of a bygone era. It stands on a plot of land measuring sixty square meters. It is a testament to early modernist architecture in Japan.

The Dentomachi Residence isn’t just a house. It’s a microcosm of Kyoto’s past. Architect Seigo Motono designed it. He blended rationality with rich forms using cutting-edge technology. Notice the exposed concrete blocks. They’re L-shaped Chin blocks created by Chin Nakamura. These blocks haven’t changed since the building’s completion in 1929. They speak volumes about the innovative spirit of that time.

Inside the Dentomachi Residence you’ll discover more surprises. The fusuma screens feature paintings created by dye artist Tsuruichi Tsurumaki. He used a wax-resistant textile dyeing technique. These aren’t your average decorative screens. They’re works of art. They reflect the fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern sensibilities. The original owner Tsuruichi Tsurumaki’s bed remains in the second-floor living room.

The house features an airy sunroom on the second floor. It’s well-ventilated and filled with natural light. The stairwell is also exceptionally bright thanks to a series of north-facing windows. Even the staircase railing boasts a unique geometric design typical of Motono’s work. And don’t overlook the V-shaped patterns on the first-floor hall flooring. It is another touch of subtle elegance.

After World War II the General Headquarters of the Allied Powers seized the Dentomachi Residence. The kitchen was repainted white. Some features were added or altered. The backrest cushion on Tsurumaki’s bed is one example. These modifications quietly record a significant turning point in Japanese history.

The Dentomachi Residence however retains its charm. It survived the war and even neglect. Students at the Kyoto Institute of Technology have helped restore it. They worked with artisans to repair the roof and indoor plaster walls. The restoration of this house is a journey in itself. It’s a joint effort to preserve a piece of Kyoto’s architectural heritage. The Lake Biwa Canal flows behind the Dentomachi Residence. It is yet another layer to this captivating place’s character. It is a silent observer of all that the house has witnessed over the years.

Today the Dentomachi Residence stands as a living museum. It reminds us of the constant interplay between tradition and modernity innovation and preservation in Kyoto’s rich and evolving narrative. Step inside. Let the house’s story unfold. Experience the past present and future of this fascinating piece of Kyoto history.
