Gazing up at the vibrant pink façade of Da Nang Cathedral, did you ever wonder why it’s called the “Rooster Church”? Right here in the heart of Da Nang, this iconic landmark, also known as the Pink Church and officially Da Nang Cathedral, has a fascinating story to tell. Da Nang Cathedral stands as a testament to the city’s rich history, a blend of French colonial influence and Vietnamese craftsmanship. Built in 1923, Da Nang Cathedral is the only church constructed in Da Nang during the French colonial era. Originally called Tourane Church, it served the French Catholic community. The cathedral’s Gothic architecture is striking, with its soaring lines, pointed arches, and intricate stained glass windows depicting various saints. Atop the bell tower sits the gray metal rooster weathervane, giving the church its local nickname. While many mistake the rooster for a French symbol, it actually represents St. Peter’s repentance and awakening, a parable from the Gospel. The construction of Da Nang Cathedral is a story of perseverance. Priest Louis Vallet conceived the idea, but several construction firms abandoned the project. Eventually, three Vo brothers from Kim Bong Village took on the challenge. They employed local laborers and artisans, imbuing the cathedral with a touch of Vietnamese influence amidst its Western style. Behind Da Nang Cathedral lies a replica of the Lourdes Grotto in France, a serene space for reflection and prayer. The cathedral itself measures approximately 70 meters in height, a beacon of faith in the city center. Its architectural brilliance has even earned it a medal from the Vatican Holy See. Today, Da Nang Cathedral remains an active place of worship, serving thousands of Catholic parishioners. Services are held daily, primarily in Vietnamese, with English sermons on Sundays. If you wish to attend a mass, arrive early as seating is limited. Remember to dress respectfully, avoid revealing clothing, and maintain a quiet demeanor during the service. Da Nang Cathedral isn’t just a religious site; it’s a vibrant cultural attraction. A visit here offers a glimpse into Da Nang’s past and present, a place where history, architecture, and faith intertwine. As you leave Da Nang Cathedral, take with you the story of the rooster, a symbol not of colonial power, but of repentance and awakening, a message as enduring as the pink walls of this beloved landmark.
