Philadelphia’s Faith Tabernacle Congregation began humbly. In May 1897 it was formally established in North Philadelphia. The church emerged from an independent mission. Shortly after, it became the Philadelphia branch of John Alexander Dowie’s Christian Catholic Church.

Faith Tabernacle likely avoided merging fully with Dowie’s organization. It rigorously followed the faith principle for church finances. The Christian Catholic Church did not. Like the Christian Catholic Church, Faith Tabernacle established similar institutions. These included a church periodical called Sword of the Spirit a faith home and a missions department.

After Assistant Pastor Ambrose Clark became the second presiding elder in 1917, these institutions flourished. Membership increased significantly particularly in the American Mid-Atlantic and West Africa. Nigeria and Ghana saw notable growth.

However, a schism occurred in late 1925. Clark left Faith Tabernacle to found the First Century Gospel Church. This event stunted Faith Tabernacle’s growth both domestically and in West Africa. Many former Faith Tabernacle followers in Nigeria and Ghana founded the oldest and largest Pentecostal churches in both countries.

Faith Tabernacle Congregation is dedicated to fostering a welcoming community. It centers around spiritual growth and faith-based teachings. Located on North 5th Street, the church encourages newcomers and members alike. All are invited to join in worship, fellowship, and community activities.

The services embrace individuals from all walks of life. The congregation offers a supportive environment. Spiritual seekers can connect and grow here. Faith Tabernacle is committed to addressing the spiritual needs of the local community. It aims to be a pivotal place for guidance and support.

Faith Tabernacle also established a Faith Home in October 1907. It was located in a building adjacent to the sanctuary. The church’s early history involved missionary work. It also published the Sword of the Spirit.

Notably, Faith Tabernacle played a role in the rise of Pentecostalism in Ghana. The church spread rapidly after the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic. It offered members spiritual social and legal advantages. By 1926 Faith Tabernacle began to decline. However, at least 177 branches had formed in southern Ghana extending into Togo and Côte d’Ivoire. It had over 4400 members.

Despite challenges and changes Faith Tabernacle has maintained its dedication. It provides a place where people can belong and grow in faith. Today the Tabernacle of Faith Church continues its mission. It welcomes all who seek spiritual connection and community. The church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring power of community.
