Whispers of ancient battles and hidden sanctuaries drifted on the wind as we approached the Marble Mountains. Here, nestled in Ngũ Hành Sơn District, just south of Da Nang, lies the Mountain of Water, known locally as Thủy Sơn. Thủy Sơn, one of five marble and limestone hills, is the only peak accessible to visitors and offers a glimpse into Vietnam’s rich history and spiritual heart. During the Vietnam War, the Marble Mountains stood near the American Marble Mountain Air Facility. It’s said that a Viet Cong hospital operated within the mountains, hidden in plain sight. Ascending the 156 steps to Thủy Sơn’s summit is a journey in itself. Each step brings you closer to panoramic views of Da Nang and the surrounding landscape. The other marble mountains – Kim (metal), Mộc (wood), Hỏa (fire), and Thổ (earth) – rise around you. Huyện Khong and Tang Chon, amongst other grottoes, punctuate the mountainside, offering cool respite and echoing with the whispers of past pilgrims. Within the Marble Mountains, and specifically within Thủy Sơn, several Buddhist and Hindu sanctuaries await. The temples of Tam Thai, Tứ Tâm, and Linh Ứng, along with the Pho Dong Pagoda, are carved into the very rock of the mountain. Statues and intricate relief carvings depict scenes from Buddhist and Hindu mythology. These sculptures are testaments to the skill of Vietnamese artisans. Though direct rock extraction is now banned, the area was once known for its stone sculpture and cutting crafts. Now, materials are brought in from quarries further afield in Quảng Nam Province. Look closely at the remaining artwork, and imagine the generations of craftspeople who shaped the very mountain into works of devotion and beauty.
