“Looking for a sign?” New Gospel Temple stands here on Tireman Avenue. It is a beacon of faith in Detroit. New Gospel Temple has a story of vision and growth. It shows a community’s dedication.

In November 1971 Pastor Lorris Upshaw Sr. had a vision. God led him to Van Dyke and Harper to establish a church. At first he did not see anything. After falling ill and being hospitalized for 29 days he returned. This time Pastor Upshaw found a small building. He began to prepare it for Christ Temple COGIC’s opening.

Soon the Lord began to add souls to the church. Through prayer meetings and fasting the church began to be blessed. The Holy Ghost transformed lives. Miracles happened and the sick were healed.

After a few years God gave Pastor Upshaw another vision. He was told to quickly buy another edifice. In 1979 Christ Temple COGIC purchased a building at 10001 Hayes and Promenade. It became New Christ Temple COGIC.

The next 20 years were a miracle story. New Christ Temple continued to grow. Its outreach in the community became profound. But this was just the tip of the iceberg. God has more plans for this ministry.
