A wave of nostalgia washes over you. You stand before Our Lady of Talpa Roman Catholic Church. Its history whispers secrets of faith and perseverance. Our Lady of Talpa wasn’t always here in Los Angeles. Its roots lie in the humble village of Talpa de Allende Mexico. There a simple church housed crude statues carved from cornstalks. One statue depicted Our Lady of the Rosary. In 1644 a miracle occurred. As a woman went to destroy this image a bright light enveloped her. The statue transformed becoming beautiful and strong. This miracle propelled devotion to Our Lady of Talpa.

The church you see today is a testament to that devotion. It’s a symbol of resilience. Between 1926 and 1928 religious persecution forced many Mexican Catholics to flee to California. They found a new home in Los Angeles. Their faith in Our Lady of Talpa remained unwavering. Father Cordero a priest in exile became the administrator of the church. The first mass was celebrated in 1927. The first baptism followed in 1928.

Our Lady of Talpa served as a beacon of hope for these families. They maintained their traditions and their faith despite hardship. The church became a vital part of the community. It acted as more than just a place of worship. It was a gathering place for support and cultural preservation. Spanish the language of their homeland became common on the east side of Los Angeles.

In 1938 Mexican priests were able to return home. The Spanish Vincentian Fathers took over Our Lady of Talpa. Father Jose Cervera a beloved pastor served the community until his death in 1964. He dreamed big envisioning a school for the children. His dream came true in 1951. Our Lady of Talpa School opened its doors. The first day was celebrated with Mass at the church. 256 children enrolled that day. Three Daughters of Charity taught the children.
