What secrets lie buried beneath the earth, whispering tales of scientific breakthroughs and forgotten dreams? Here, at the 地生院遗址, the remnants of Building 6, once known as “Huayanli 1,” stand as a silent testament to a bygone era. This unassuming structure, once the tallest building outside Deshengmen, cradled the nascent dreams of Chinese science. It was a beacon of innovation in a landscape of farmland, its windows glowing late into the night as dedicated scientists toiled away. Today, nestled among towering high-rises, the 地生院遗址 whispers a story of ambition, resilience, and the enduring spirit of scientific inquiry. In the late 1950s, China embarked on the “Great Leap Forward,” a period of intense ambition. A grand plan was hatched to build a “Science City,” modeled after Moscow State University, outside Deshengmen. Two buildings rose from the farmland: Building 917 and the imposing six-story Huayanli 1. This building became a hub for the Chinese Academy of Sciences, housing institutes like the Institute of Geology and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. But the dream of Science City was short-lived. The political winds shifted, the project was abandoned, and the two lone buildings remained. Huayanli 1, later renamed Building 6, became a crucible of scientific achievement. Over 40 academicians, including Xie Xiande, a foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, worked within these walls. From this unassuming building emerged groundbreaking research. Scientists here laid the theoretical framework for nuclear geology, undertook critical national defense tasks like underground nuclear testing, and pioneered the development of key mineral materials. They drove the exploration and development of crucial resource bases and crafted China’s first 1:4,000,000 tectonic map. They created the first artificially grown piezoelectric quartz crystal and explored the formation mechanisms of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Building 6 witnessed the evolution of Chinese geological science, a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of generations of scientists. It also bore witness to the transformation of the surrounding landscape, from tranquil farmland to a bustling metropolis, including the development of the Olympic Sports City for the 2008 Olympic Games. While much of the surrounding area has changed beyond recognition, Building 6 persists, a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Chinese scientific history. Today, we remember this building not just for its scientific legacy, but also for the values it represents: a dedication to science, a relentless pursuit of knowledge, and a quiet determination to contribute to the nation’s progress.
