What if I told you that this desert landscape beneath Mary’s Point was once a lush meadow? It’s true. Las Vegas, meaning “the meadows” in Spanish, owes its name to the artesian springs that once nourished this valley.

From this vantage point at Mary’s Point, imagine the year 1821. Rafael Rivera, a Spanish scout, stumbles upon these springs while searching for a trade route. He sees verdant grasses fed by the water. The name “Las Vegas” is born from this discovery.

Later, from Mary’s Point, picture the valley in 1855. Mormon missionaries arrive. They construct a fort to protect travelers on the Salt Lake Los Angeles Trail. They cultivate the land, but their enterprise proves unprofitable. They abandon the fort after only two years. The fort’s legacy lives on, becoming the oldest historical site in Las Vegas.

Now, shift your perspective from Mary’s Point to 1905. Senator William Clark auctions off land. This attracts over 3,000 prospective buyers. They bid on lots along what becomes Fremont Street. Las Vegas begins its transformation from a watering hole to a bustling town.

From Mary’s Point, it’s hard to imagine a “temperance town.” Early Las Vegas tried to restrict alcohol. However, exceptions were numerous. Drug stores, doctor’s offices, and restaurants could sell alcohol. Block 16 and Block 17 became the red-light district. Bars, saloons, hotels, and brothels thrived.

Consider the view from Mary’s Point in 1931. Nevada legalizes gambling. Construction on the Hoover Dam begins. Thousands of workers flood the area. Las Vegas becomes a place where they can drink. They can fraternize and gamble. The city’s population quadruples.

Casinos flourish. The Las Vegas Club, Apache Hotel, and Northern Club are the first to receive casino licenses. All are located on Fremont Street. The Flamingo opens in 1946. This marks the beginning of the Strip. Mobster Bugsy Siegel raises the stakes with a luxurious resort.

From Mary’s Point, you can see how Las Vegas became “Sin City”. It resisted national prohibition laws. City officials warned business owners of federal raids. Arrests were rare. Prostitution was legal. The nickname stuck.

From this overlook at Mary’s Point, recognize the layers of history beneath the neon lights. From desert springs to a glittering metropolis, Las Vegas has transformed. It evolved from a dusty railroad stop into an entertainment capital. It is a city of constant reinvention.
