How high do you think Ankara’s skyline reaches? The Cumhuriyet Kulesi in Ankara towers 197 meters into the sky. That’s taller than the Statue of Liberty including its base. The Cumhuriyet Kulesi wasn’t built overnight. Far from it. The initial tender for the Cumhuriyet Kulesi was awarded in 2002 by the Keçiören Municipality. The foundation stone was laid with much fanfare on July 18 2003. Initially planned for completion in April 2004 the project faced numerous setbacks. In 2005 the initial contractor’s contract was terminated. Legal battles with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality ensued. In 2009 the construction permit was revoked. Then in 2013 the Council of State even ordered the demolition of the partially built structure. The people of Keçiören however weren’t ready to give up on their tower.
In a remarkable show of public support a 2017 referendum saw 76% of voters supporting the completion of the Cumhuriyet Kulesi. The building permit was changed in 2018. Finally in 2020 a new tender was issued and the construction resumed. The Cumhuriyet Kulesi was officially opened on March 18 2024. After many years of challenges and delays the project was finally realized.
The Cumhuriyet Kulesi is more than just a tall building. It’s a symbol of hope and resilience. It’s made entirely of reinforced concrete.
