“Monumental head” is what they say. Here we stand before the 2-Stein Sculpture. It is a piece demanding attention and sparking dialogue.

The 2-Stein Sculpture is located on Corneliusstrasse. Hartmut Stielow created it in 1999. The gallery Georg Nothelfer bought the sculpture. It was erected here in February 2002. The galerist wanted to create a sculpture boulevard.

Look closely. The 2-Stein Sculpture features a conical steel stele. It bends slightly toward the bank. The base has a rectangular shape. It leans eastward. The steel is artificially corroded giving it a weathered look.

Two parallel gray granite blocks are inserted in the lower third. These blocks rise slightly westward. Jörg Kuhn described the sculpture.

The 2-Stein Sculpture’s composition is full of contrasts. The contrast between the artificially corroded steel and the light gray natural stone is clear. Also the contrast between the near horizontal and vertical axes are visible. The inclinations and deviations create tension from geometric forms.

Stielow created a monumental head in extreme abstraction. The two parallel granite blocks form “lips”. These lips are extremely enlarged compared to the rest of the head.

The 2-Stein Sculpture uses specific materials. The stele consists of steel. The beams consist of granite. The steel is cast, forged, and welded. The stone is hewn, smoothed, and assembled.

Consider the artist’s intention. Stielow sought to create tension. He wanted to play with contrasts. He used both material and form. The sculpture invites us to reflect on the interplay between nature and artifice. It makes us reflect on geometry and organic deviation.

Take a moment to walk around the 2-Stein Sculpture. Notice how the light changes its appearance. The corroded steel shifts in tone. It emphasizes different aspects of the form. The rough texture invites tactile exploration, a silent dialogue with the artist’s hand.

The 2-Stein Sculpture is more than just an object. It’s an experience. It’s a point of contemplation in the urban landscape. It is a reminder that art can challenge. It inspires and transforms our perception of the world around us. So, let the “monumental head” stay in your memory. Let it spark further exploration of art. Let it spark exploration of the stories objects can tell.
