Picture this a bustling community rising from the fields of Chemnitz. The Ev.-Luth Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirchgemeinde Chemnitz wasn’t always here. Its story begins in the 1970s with the construction of the Fritz Heckert housing development. A planned city for 100000 people it needed a church.

Initially new residents were served by the St Nikolai-Thomas parish. But the rapidly growing community soon outgrew its existing facilities. The Heilig-Geist-Kapelle in Helbersdorf was simply too small. It was a temporary solution. A small chapel built from materials salvaged from a church destroyed in World War II.

Then came a pivotal moment. In 1979 the Ev.-Luth Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirchgemeinde and the Catholic St Franziskus parish were founded. They shared the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle. This was a time of ecumenical cooperation. A testament to shared faith in a rapidly changing city.

But the need for a dedicated space remained. Two kilometers away in Markersdorf an old farm was acquired. Between 1983 and 1985 the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche was built. It became more than a church. It housed community rooms offices and classrooms all under one roof.

The church was named after Dietrich Bonhoeffer a theologian who courageously resisted Nazi ideology. His legacy of faith and resistance is embedded in the very foundations of this building. Bonhoeffer’s insights inspire the community to engage with contemporary challenges.

The church initially lacked a bell tower. That changed in 2016 when a new tower was added. It stands as a symbol of growth and resilience. The bell tower is a landmark a visible testament to the enduring faith of the community.

The motto of the Ev.-Luth Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirchgemeinde Chemnitz is simple yet powerful: “We want to be a church for others” open to everyone. It’s a church that reflects the spirit of its namesake. A community embracing its history and its future a place of faith hope and service in the heart of Chemnitz.
