What secrets do the walls of Aulas Comunes D hold? This building, part of the National University of Córdoba’s Rectorado, whispers tales of centuries past. Aulas Comunes D stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Jesuits in Córdoba. Their influence is etched into the very stones of this place. The National University of Córdoba, established by the Jesuits in 1613, is the oldest recognized university in Argentina. It’s the seventh oldest in Spanish America. This institution earned Córdoba the nickname “La Docta,” meaning “the learned.” The Jesuits arrived in Córdoba in 1599. They built the Colegio Maximo in 1610, which later became the university. The original structure underwent expansions between 1735 and 1742. Architect Giovanni A. Bianchi added two stories with distinctive vaults. This architectural heritage can still be seen today at Aulas Comunes D. The Jesuits’ impact extended beyond the university walls. They established five “Reducciones” in nearby valleys: Santa Catalina, Jesús María, Caroya, Candelaria, and Alta Gracia. Each had its own church and buildings. These settlements became the seeds of modern towns like Alta Gracia. In 1767, King Charles III expelled the Jesuits from the Americas. The Franciscans then administered the university. Later, control shifted to the provincial and then the national government. In 1853, the Jesuits returned. The high school and university were nationalized a year later. The University of Córdoba spearheaded academic changes in Argentina. The University Reform of 1918 began here and rippled across the continent. This reform was sparked by student strikes demanding changes to outdated syllabuses, university autonomy, joint governance, and democratic elections for authorities. Aulas Comunes D, within the Rectorado, continues to serve the university’s mission of education. The building is a vital part of this historic institution. It carries the weight of history within its walls. The echoes of past scholars and reformers resonate within these classrooms. Aulas Comunes D remains a hub of learning, continuing the Jesuit tradition of “virtue and letters.”
