“Black duck,” a local boy whispered, pointing to the serene expanse of water. He was referring, of course, to the body of water we now know as Lake Kurwongbah, here in Kurwongbah. Derived from the Kabi language, “Kurwongbah” beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Sideling Creek it graces. Though it may seem like a natural wonder, Lake Kurwongbah is actually a testament to human ingenuity. Created in 1958, this man-made reservoir was the result of damming Sideling Creek. The dam, an engineering marvel of its time, serves a vital purpose. It ensures a steady water supply to the region, particularly during drier periods, and played a crucial role in supplying the Amcor paper mill in nearby Petrie. Today, Kurwongbah is a tranquil haven for both residents and visitors. This peaceful facade hides a vibrant past, though. This very location was once home to the exhilarating Lakeside Motor Racing Circuit, which opened its doors in 1961. Conceived as a replacement for the Strathpine circuit, it quickly gained fame, even hosting the Australian Grand Prix in 1966. The roar of engines and cheers of crowds once filled the air, adding a thrilling chapter to Kurwongbah’s story.
