“Imagine sails billowing in the wind”. That is the vision architect Frank Gehry had for the Neuer Zollhof in Dusseldorf’s Hafengebiet. This harbor district pulses with reinvention. It transformed from a trade hub to a modern spectacle.

Once, the Hafengebiet thrived as a vital port. Barges bustled, carrying materials along the Rhine. But fortunes shifted. The Mannesmann pipe factory closed. The harbor seemed destined for decline.

Yet, Dusseldorf saw potential. The city reimagined the Hafengebiet. It wasn’t just about preserving the past. It was about creating a future. The eastern docks became a canvas for innovation.

Media, design, and fashion companies flocked here. Westdeutscher Rundfunk set up studios. Antenne Dusseldorf broadcasted from the harbor’s heart. A large cinema opened, drawing crowds. The Landtag and Rheinturm stand as neighbors.

The Neuer Zollhof embodies this transformation. Frank Gehry’s warped buildings defy convention. These postmodern structures aren’t just offices. They are art. Restaurants, bars, and clubs create a vibrant lifestyle district.

Gehry’s buildings were completed in 1998. People also call them the Gehry Buildings. Each building has a unique facade. Stainless steel, limestone, and red clinker bricks define them. The tallest rises fourteen stories.

Legend says all buildings here connect to the harbor. The Gehry Buildings symbolize moving ship sails. They spiral into the sky, reflecting Dusseldorf’s sunny days.

Other architects shaped the Hafengebiet. David Chipperfield, Joe Coenen, and Steven Holl also left their mark. But Gehry’s vision often steals the show.

The western part of the Hafengebiet still functions as a port. Barges continue to transport goods. High-end apartments are planned, blending industry with luxury.

In 2003, the port company joined forces with Neuss. Together, they formed Neuss-Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH & Co. KG. This merger strengthened their position on the Rhine.

The Medienhafen offers transparency with visual axes toward the inner city. The Rhine Tower was built in 1982. In 1988, the new state parliament building followed.

Over 800 businesses thrive in this district. They embrace the Medienhafen’s image. It is an “Architecture Mile”. The Casa Stupenda continues this architectural evolution.

The Hafengebiet reveals Dusseldorf’s spirit. It is a blend of history and modernity. It’s more than just a harbor. It’s a testament to reinvention. It is a place where art meets industry. The Hafengebiet stands as a symbol of Dusseldorf’s dynamic future.
