The Federal Aviation Administration worried about air traffic. The building’s shadow on Boston Common also caused a stir. It broke a state law. So the height was reduced several times before finally reaching its current size. The name also changed. From Winthrop Square Tower to Winthrop Center.
The original Winthrop Square Garage was demolished. But not without controversy. Many activists protested the construction. They felt the building’s shadow would harm Boston Common. Mayor Marty Walsh even tried to change the law to allow the tower’s construction. It was a tough battle. But Winthrop Center stands tall today.
Inside Winthrop Center you’ll find impressive tenants. Deloitte. McKinsey & Company. Even Cambridge Associates call this building home. And that’s just the office space. The building also has luxury condos. And it includes a huge amount of amenity space. Think a 75-foot indoor pool. A massive grand hall. This is more than just a building. It’s a whole community.
The park surrounding Winthrop Center has also been improved. There are trees benches and even a water feature. It truly is a stunning addition to Boston’s skyline. This magnificent building has transformed a simple garage into a landmark. And it created a new park as well. A real win-win situation for the city.
