Have you noticed the unique stone-like facade? That’s our starting point for the story of Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen. This incredible church stands proudly on La Cañada. It’s a key part of Córdoba’s identity.

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen belongs to the convent of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers. This order originated in Mount Carmel Palestine in the 12th century. They arrived in Argentina in 1899. By 1901 they had built a small church on Jujuy Street. Later it was moved to Avenida Figueroa Alcorta near La Cañada.

The church and cloister were completed in 1912 by José Mont Blanch a Catalan architect. Here the first Carmelite students from Andalusia trained. Later it served as a novitiate a student residence and a pre-novitiate.

The facade has a stone-like finish called “París stone”. It showcases a neo-Gothic style. A single bell tower rises straight up like a needle reaching for the sky.

Inside Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen the columns are slender. The walls are dark and tall. Natural light highlights the tabernacle and the Virgin’s niche. The altarpieces are crafted from gilded oak with fine gold. They are the work of Casa Juan Majó from Barcelona. The image of the Virgin of Carmen was created by Francisco Font from Madrid. Did you know this church has some of the best acoustics in Córdoba?
