Three bells chime a haunting melody. Their sound drifts from the slender spire of Maria-Schutz. This is not just any church.

Maria-Schutz in Freiburg’s Wiehre district boasts a rich history. Originally built between 1885 and 1889 it served Freiburg’s Catholic community. Specifically it catered to the workers of the nearby Knopfhäusle settlement. Initially named Maria-Hilf Church it was consecrated on October 27 1889 by Archbishop Christian Roos.

The church’s interior underwent a significant transformation between 1921 and 1923. Munich artist Hermann Anton Bantle adorned the walls with frescoes. Sadly only three survive today. You can still admire the White Madonna surrounded by angels above the iconostasis. A depiction of the Crucifixion and the Holy Family also remain.

But Maria-Hilf’s story took a turn. As Freiburg expanded the church proved too small. A larger Maria-Hilf Church was constructed nearby between 1927 and 1929. The original was then largely abandoned.

A new chapter began in 1980. The Catholic Church gifted Maria-Hilf to the Orthodox community. Its name changed to Maria-Schutz meaning Protection of Mary. This reflects its role as a shared space. Renovations adapted it for Orthodox services.

The Romanian Orthodox community was first to use Maria-Schutz in 1980. The Serbian and Greek communities joined in 1981. The Russian Orthodox community arrived in 2003. Today Maria-Schutz serves as a vibrant hub for diverse Orthodox congregations.

Observe the church’s simple neo-Romanesque design. A Latin cross plan forms its basic structure. Short transepts extend the main body. A gable roof covers the entire building. Notice the four window axes on the nave. These let in soft light illuminating the interior.

Those three bells in the wooden and tin-clad bell tower? They’re relatively recent additions. Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling of Heidelberg cast them in 1953. Their clear tones resonate across the Wiehre neighbourhood. They’re a modern addition to a centuries-old legacy.

The building next to Maria-Schutz was once a parish hall. It even housed a kindergarten. Later it became student accommodation. Now its future is uncertain. It may be converted into apartments.

So here stands Maria-Schutz. A testament to Freiburg’s rich cultural diversity. A small church with a big history. A place of worship for many faiths. Its humble exterior belies its enduring spirit. This is more than a building. This is a place of faith hope and shared community.
