Ever wondered what it’s like to step into a piece of Lille’s history? That’s precisely what we’re about to do here at Cour Stien. This spot whispers tales of a city constantly evolving.

Cour Stien is more than just a location. It is a portal to understanding Lille’s architectural and social evolution. Lille has these courées. They must adapt to modern life.

Let’s dive into the story of these courées. The initial command was clear. The goal was to protect these unique Lille courées. They must adapt to contemporary lifestyles and current standards. This included Cour Stien.

The approach was hands-on. A multi-disciplinary team immersed itself in the neighborhood. They studied its history. They forged close ties with the local population. They collaborated with all stakeholders. This included the city, owners, institutions, and residents. All worked together to prioritize needs and resources.

The proposal was thoughtful. It aimed to maintain the popular and cultural diversity of the Wazemmes district. It also enhanced the courées habitat. This was done through the renovation of several courées, including the Cour Stien.

These courées often feature repetitive units. These units are small about 15 m2. They also face a single direction. Inherited from Lille’s industrial past, these houses are now ill-suited. They lack comfort and modern layouts. The proposal sought to expand housing options for large families, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Moreover, the project aimed to revive neglected communal spaces. The configuration, equipment, and management are very important. Their quality is crucial for building social bonds within the courées. The refurbishment of outdoor spaces focused on redefining private and communal boundaries. It also improved access and management of these courées.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the renovations, a legal study was conducted. It examined the ownership status of the courées. It proposed establishing an ASL. This is a free union association for each courée. The project management assisted in drafting statutes and forming these associations.

Phasing the operation was vital. Work was carried out on occupied sites. Acquisitions were made by La Fabrique des Quartiers. Project management assisted with DUP works. DUP stands for Déclaration d’Utilité Publique.

Jointly mobilizing occupants and landlords was essential. The participatory approach created opportunities to bring everyone together. It converged interests and resources. This ensured everyone embraced the project. This project was more human than urban. The social aspect took precedence over the architectural side. Participation occurred on four levels. These were conception to completion. It involved sharing information for good communication. It also included consulting to involve stakeholders and gather opinions. Collaboration meant working with, not just for, people. Empowerment aimed to develop co-management. It also encouraged the project’s continuation within a simple, pre-defined framework.

The Labo Postes/Justice became the emblematic location for this operation. This project house served as a hub for exchanges and meetings. It was a canteen for workers and a festive space for locals. It also featured an exhibition gallery and a café restaurant.

The success of such an operation hinged on the substance, approach, and understanding of the social context. The requalification really enhanced Cour Stien.

So, as we stand here at Cour Stien, remember it is not just bricks and mortar. It is a living story of community, adaptation, and the enduring spirit of Lille. This is how Cour Stien remains a vital part of the city’s fabric.
