In the heart of Mannheim, the Mehmet Akif Camii stands as a testament to community and faith. Mehmet Akif Camii isn’t just a mosque. It’s a vibrant cultural center and a place where people from all walks of life are welcome. The mosque actively engages with local churches and schools, hosting tours and participating in interfaith events. The story of Mehmet Akif Camii begins in Munich in the 1960s. Many Turkish workers migrated to Munich after an agreement with BMW. These Muslim workers soon began congregating for prayers. By 1972, they found a space in the BMW Heime along the Motorstraße 61, which served as their makeshift mosque. In 1984, the community joined the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB). Trained imams from Turkey replaced the volunteer imams. The dream of a dedicated space became a reality on December 15, 2000. The community, with support from DITIB, purchased a building on Moosacher Straße 22. Through hard work and dedication, they transformed it into the beautiful Mehmet Akif Camii we see today. The mosque’s namesake, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, was a prominent Ottoman poet. Born in Istanbul in 1837, Ersoy was a linguistic prodigy, fluent in Turkish, Arabic, Persian, French, and Albanian. His poetry inspired generations. He also penned the Turkish national anthem. Mehmet Akif Camii covers a total area of 1,200 square meters, including the entrance area. The prayer area itself spans 1,000 square meters. The mosque can accommodate up to 1,000 worshippers. On Fridays, around 700 people gather for prayers, and on holidays, the number swells to 1,000. The three-story building houses various facilities. The basement has a conference hall for events, accommodating around 150 people. The first floor serves as the men’s prayer room. The second floor houses the women’s prayer room, a youth room, and classrooms for children. Mehmet Akif Camii serves as a vital bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and community in Mannheim.
