Across the street stands Rakusei High School. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to a unique blend of history, education, and cultural legacy. Kyoto Prefectural Rakusei High School officially opened its doors in January 1980. The first headmaster was Itoh Tomio. That April, 349 eager students walked through those gates for the first time. Rakusei High School, part of the larger St. Viator Rakusei Gakuen, traces its roots back to a turbulent period in China. Its predecessor, Jingdong Middle School, was established in Siping Street, Manchuria, by the Viatorians. This Catholic religious order, founded in France in 1831, sought to create a beacon of Catholic education in Asia. As World War II raged and the Chinese Civil War intensified, Jingdong Middle School was forced to relocate, scattering its legacy. Some staff and students found their way to Kyoto. Here, in this ancient capital, they found fertile ground to replant the seeds of their educational mission. The Viatorians, already present in Japan since 1948, saw an opportunity to continue their work. In collaboration with the Kyoto Diocese, Rakusei High School was born, a unique fusion of Japanese educational principles and the Viatorian philosophy of “whole person education.” Rakusei is not just a high school; it’s a complete six-year educational journey, encompassing both middle and high school levels. This unbroken chain of learning allows for a deeper immersion in both academics and character development. Interestingly, Rakusei High School, despite its Catholic affiliation, does not actively recruit students. It operates as a fully integrated middle and high school, nurturing students within its own system. The school emphasizes a well-rounded education. This includes academics, club activities, school events, and religious instruction, all designed to foster a balance of mind, body, and spirit. Rakusei has a rich tradition of academic excellence, particularly in mathematics. It boasts numerous medal winners in international mathematics Olympiads. The school’s dedication to cultivating critical thinking and problem-solving skills is evident in its rigorous curriculum. This includes a unique approach to university entrance exam preparation, beginning in middle school itself. Rakusei High School has also had its share of challenges. In 2022, a serious case of embezzlement came to light involving a long-time administrator. This shook the school community but also highlighted its commitment to transparency and accountability. In the aftermath, the school implemented stricter financial controls and renewed its focus on ethical governance.
