Have you ever heard of a church that started in an ice cream parlor? That’s exactly how the story of Victory in Christ Cathedral begins. Picture this: 1981, a small group of devoted Christians gathered for Bible study. Not just anywhere, but in an ice cream parlor right here at 1444 Broadway, the very spot where Victory in Christ Cathedral stands today. This group, led by the late Elder Albert Walker, had a vision. They called themselves “Victory in Christ,” a name that seemed to foretell their future. Initially envisioning themselves as a traveling ministry, they felt a divine nudge to establish roots right here in the heart of the city. And so, with a leap of faith, they purchased the ice cream parlor, transforming it into a beacon of hope and faith. The early days saw humble beginnings: a handful of chairs and a makeshift pulpit fashioned from a potato chip rack. But as the congregation grew, so did the church. The late 80s saw the arrival of beautiful church furniture from Jacksonville, Florida, including the very pulpit still in use today. A decade later, a magnificent painting of the Garden of Gethsemane, donated by the talented artist Bernard Cameron, graced its walls. The Victory in Christ Cathedral we see today is a testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of its congregation. It’s a place where the sweet aroma of faith, once mingled with the scent of ice cream, continues to inspire and uplift.
