Oxford’s energy landscape changed forever in 1892. That year saw the opening of the Osney Power Station, the city’s first electrical power plant. Now, let’s fast forward to the present day. Here we stand before the Global Leadership Centre (GLC). It’s housed within the very walls of that historic power station. The Global Leadership Centre isn’t just repurposing a building. It’s transforming the very concept of leadership education. The GLC is a shining example of adaptive reuse, breathing new life into this landmark. Saïd Business School, part of the University of Oxford, had the vision to transform this Victorian-era powerhouse into a 21st-century hub. The GLC is more than just bricks and mortar. It aims to power the development of innovative leadership models, designed to tackle global challenges. Inside, you’ll find cutting-edge digital tools and a variety of learning spaces. These spaces support both face-to-face and remote learning, connecting leaders across the globe. The development was no small feat. Construction partner GRAHAM undertook a full internal refurbishment. They created high-quality teaching spaces, along with leisure facilities, dining areas, and even 121 hotel-style rooms for students. The Global Leadership Centre’s location is strategic. It’s just a short walk from the main Saïd Business School building on Park End Street, creating a mini-campus. This fosters close links between business research and real-world practice. Furthermore, the GLC plays a vital role in the regeneration of Oxford’s west end. The project created jobs and opportunities for the local community. In keeping with the school’s sustainability values, the GLC incorporates environmentally friendly features. Think solar panels, green roofs, and even bird and bat boxes. The Global Leadership Centre is a beacon of innovation, demonstrating how the past can power the future of leadership.
