Have you ever heard the story of a synagogue that survived lawsuits and changing demographics? Welcome to Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Corona Queens. This unassuming building holds a fascinating history. It’s the oldest synagogue building in Queens continuously used for worship.

Tifereth Israel Synagogue was founded around 1907 by Ashkenazi Jews from Manhattan’s Lower East Side. They sought a new home in the growing Queens community. Estee Lauder and her parents were early members. The synagogue was initially known as the Home Street Synagogue. This reflects its importance as a welcoming space for these new residents.

The synagogue building itself is a marvel. Constructed in 1911 it’s a unique blend of Gothic and Moorish Revival styles. Architect Crescent L Varrone designed it. He adapted the narrow tenement synagogue style from Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The building features stunning pointed-arched windows and a beautiful Star of David in colored glass.

In the 1970s and 1980s many Jewish families left Corona. Tifereth Israel faced hard times. The aging congregation struggled to maintain the building. They even struggled to find enough men for a minyan. This is the minimum number of people for a prayer quorum.

In the 1990s Bukharan Jewish families began to move to the area. They began worshipping in Tifereth Israel’s basement. Tensions arose between the original Ashkenazi congregation and the new Bukharan community. Lawsuits and court battles followed. Eventually the Bukharan community took over the synagogue.

The building fell into serious disrepair. It needed extensive repairs. The New York Landmarks Conservancy stepped in to help. They started a major restoration project. The project was made possible through grants. The grants came from New York City New York State and private donors. These included members of the Lauder family.

Today Tifereth Israel stands as a testament to resilience. It’s a symbol of the changing face of Queens. It continues to serve as a place of worship. It also serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of the Jewish community. The building’s remarkable story proves even after facing numerous challenges the spirit of Tifereth Israel continues to shine brightly. The synagogue stands tall a beacon of faith community and history.
