Think of red bricks meeting blue water. Does that conjure up an image of Hamburg? With around 2500 bridges, Hamburg is one of Europe’s most bridge-rich cities. Let’s talk about one. It is the Schüttenberg-Brücke.

Hamburg’s countless bridges are due to its location. It lies in the Elbe’s inland delta. The Alster and Bille rivers add to the need. Numerous tributaries, canals, and the expansion of the port demand many bridges. These waterways connect to a dense road and railway network.

The Schüttenberg-Brücke is more than steel and concrete. It is a testament to Hamburg’s ingenuity. The city cleverly integrates infrastructure. U-Bahn lines often run above ground on elevated tracks. This creates unique bridges.

Defining a bridge isn’t always simple. The Landesbetrieb Straßen, Brücken und Gewässer, or LSBG, has specific criteria. For vehicle bridges, the clear width must be two meters. Footbridges need a support width of at least five meters. Structures over 80 meters wide are tunnels. Deutsche Bahn has a different definition. It considers anything over two meters a bridge. This includes signal cantilevers over tracks.

In 2004, Hamburg had 2496 bridges. The LSBG maintained 1256. The Hamburg Port Authority managed 354 as harbor bridges. This included bridges of the Hafenbahn. Deutsche Bahn owned 477. The Hamburger Hochbahn had 396. The AKN Eisenbahn had 13. Private bridges in places like Hagenbecks Tierpark are excluded. Nominally, pipeline bridges and large sign supports are included.

Around 400 of these bridges had official names in 2007. Some names come from the roads or waterways they span. Harbor bridges often take their names from their endpoints.

The bridges carry traffic and stories too. The Adolphsbrücke crosses the Alsterfleet. It was built in 1843. The Altenwallbrücke spans the Mönkedammfleet. It dates back to 1842 or 1844. The Brooksbrücke over the Zollkanal was built in 1888. Johann Hermann Maack designed the Bleichenbrücke. It crosses the Bleichenfleet.

Each bridge contributes to Hamburg’s unique character. The Schüttenberg-Brücke stands as an unsung hero. It blends functionality with the city’s charm.

Consider this as you cross the Schüttenberg-Brücke. Each arch supports more than just concrete. The bridge connects communities. It carries history. It reflects Hamburg’s innovative spirit. Remember, you are walking across a vital thread. It weaves together this maritime metropolis.
