On a crisp autumn afternoon in 1918, within the hallowed halls of the Rectorado of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, a spark ignited. A student, Deodoro Roca, penned a manifesto. This manifesto, echoing through the corridors of the Rectorado, became the battle cry of the Reforma Universitaria. The Rectorado, the very heart of Argentina’s oldest university, became the epicenter of a student-led movement that would transform higher education across Latin America. The Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, affectionately nicknamed “La Casa de Trejo,” was founded in 1613 by the Jesuits. For over two centuries, it held the distinction of being the sole university in Argentina, earning Córdoba the moniker “La Docta,” meaning “The Learned.” The Rectorado, the administrative center of the university, has witnessed centuries of academic evolution. It has seen the university grow from its initial three faculties – Philosophy, Theology, and Law – to the fifteen diverse faculties it boasts today. The Rectorado’s walls hold stories of budget cuts and student protests, echoing the financial struggles faced by Argentina’s national universities during periods of economic hardship. The Rectorado, a silent observer, stood as students occupied the Pabellón Argentina in 2018 to protest national budget cuts, a dramatic event in the university’s history. Today, the Rectorado at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba continues to be the administrative center. It supports a vibrant student population exceeding 178,000, encompassing 15 faculties, 346 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It also supports a network of 145 research institutes, 25 libraries, and 17 museums. The spirit of the Reforma Universitaria, born within the Rectorado’s walls, continues to inspire academic freedom and autonomy, shaping the university’s identity to this day.
