You are standing right in front of the Bilala Bin Rabah Mosque. It’s hard to believe that such a modest structure holds such a rich history. This site was once known as Rachel’s Tomb, a revered place of pilgrimage for Jews and Christians alike. But for centuries, the Bilala Bin Rabah Mosque has stood as a testament to the city’s Islamic heritage.

The mosque is named after Bilal ibn Rabah, a prominent companion of the Prophet Muhammad. He was a freed slave who served as the first ever mu’azzin, the person who calls Muslims to prayer. Bilal’s voice resonated across Medina, a powerful sound that echoed his own journey from slavery to liberation. In a moment of devotion, Muhammad, seeking a strong and beautiful voice, chose Bilal for this important role, and his powerful calls to prayer reverberated throughout the fledgling Islamic community of Medina.

While this is a mosque now, it was once a site considered holy to three religions. The story dates back to the time of Jacob, the patriarch of Israel, a familiar name in Jewish, Islamic, and Christian traditions. As Jacob and his family traveled through the promised land, Rachel, Jacob’s wife, died giving birth to her son, Benjamin. Jacob, in his grief, buried her in this very spot.

The site remained a place of mourning and remembrance for Jews. In the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire ruled over Palestine, and their Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, ordered the construction of a shrine for Rachel. But Muslims, too, held this site as sacred, and the shrine evolved to become a mosque.

The mosque stands as a symbol of unity, a place where people of different faiths, including Muslims, Jews, and Christians, held this place as sacred. Its history is a reminder of the intertwined destinies of these different communities.
