José María Paz was more than just a brilliant military strategist. Born in Córdoba in 1791 he was a man of intellect. He studied philosophy theology mathematics and jurisprudence. He traded those books for a sword though. He joined the Army of the North after the May Revolution. His skill in battle was undeniable. He rose through the ranks. He earned the respect of his peers and the fear of his enemies. His achievements include a pivotal role in the war against Brazil. His strategic brilliance earned him a promotion to general on the battlefield.
His rise to power was meteoric. After the war with Brazil Paz was thrust into the brutal conflict between Unitarians and Federals. He sided with the Unitarians. He became a pivotal figure in the ongoing internal battles of Argentina. His tactical prowess is legendary. He defeated Facundo Quiroga twice shattering the myth of the latter’s invincibility. Quiroga even admitted Paz’s strategic brilliance.
But even the most skilled general can be outsmarted. In 1831 while scouting terrain before a battle with Estanislao López near Villa Concepción del Tío Paz was ambushed. His horse was tripped by a soldier’s boleadoras. Paz was captured and spent the next eight years as a prisoner first under López then under Juan Manuel de Rosas.
His imprisonment however did not diminish him. During his captivity in Santa Fe he began writing his memoirs. This was not a time of idleness. The prison walls could not contain the spirit of General Paz.
There is an intriguing story of love and devotion. His niece Margarita Weild fell for him. Their love blossomed amidst the harsh realities of prison. She visited him daily. She cared for him.
