Gazing at the tranquil greenery of Gervinuspark, it’s hard to imagine this peaceful haven once held the weight of Essen’s history. Gervinuspark wasn’t always a park. It began its life in the 19th century as Essen’s Westfriedhof, a final resting place for many. The park still holds echoes of its past. Some of the old gravestones remain, whispering stories of those who rested here. One notable figure buried here is Wilhelm Kerckhoff, the first and only mayor of Altendorf before it became part of Essen. His family tomb, a testament to his significance, is still maintained by the city as a place of honor within Gervinuspark. The park also holds the memory of Hermann Köster, a prominent labor leader. His funeral procession in 1920, starting at Frohnhauser Markt and ending here, painted a somber picture against the backdrop of the then-still-active cemetery. Originally on the outskirts of Essen, rapid population growth due to the coal mining boom and the nearby Krupp steel factory quickly placed the cemetery near the heart of Frohnhausen. Landscape architect Otto Linne, known for his work in Essen from 1908 to 1914, shaped the cemetery’s layout, creating a small hill for prominent graves. By 1959, burials ceased, and in 1991, the land was deconsecrated, paving the way for Gervinuspark’s transformation. In 1960, the cemetery was reborn as Gervinuspark. Named after historian and politician Georg Gottfried Gervinus, the park retained its mature trees and incorporated new playgrounds. In 2004, the old mourning hall was demolished, making way for a new children’s playground with a water feature. The former maintenance yard was also integrated into the park in 2008, adding more green space. Today, Gervinuspark spans five hectares. It boasts playgrounds for all ages, a sports field, and ping pong tables. The Gervinus elementary school borders the park to the east. Nature, however, had its own plans. In 2014, the storm Ela ravaged the park, damaging and uprooting many of its old trees. The park was temporarily closed for safety but has since recovered with newly planted trees. More recent additions include a steel pavilion in 2017 and a redesigned entrance with raised flower beds and seating in 2018. So, as you enjoy the tranquility of Gervinuspark, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From a bustling cemetery to a vibrant park, Gervinuspark stands as a testament to Essen’s evolving story.
