High school is more than just classrooms and textbooks. Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School stands as a testament to faith and community in Drexel Hill Pennsylvania.
Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School began as two separate schools. Monsignor Bonner was for boys. Archbishop Prendergast was for girls. In 2012 they merged into one co-educational institution.
The story of Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast starts with the land itself. Before the schools, Christopher Fallon built a mansion here in 1850. Later, Colonel Anthony Drexel bought it. The area became known as Drexel Hill. A fire destroyed the mansion in 1908. Only the gatehouse remained.
In 1917 the Archdiocese of Philadelphia purchased the land. Archbishop Edmond Prendergast planned an orphanage for 500 children. It was to be run by the Sisters of Charity. He named it St. Vincent’s Orphanage. Sadly he died before its completion.
For over 30 years St. Vincent’s served as an orphanage. By 1953 the need for an orphanage decreased. Reverend John F. O’Hara decided to transform the building. It became Archbishop Prendergast High School for Boys.
In 1956 a new building opened next door. This was named Monsignor Bonner High School. Bonner became the school for boys. Prendergast became the school for girls. Both schools have a rich history.
Monsignor Bonner High School is named after Reverend Monsignor John J. Bonner. He was the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He held that position until his death in 1945.
Archbishop Prendergast High School is named after Archbishop Edmond Francis Prendergast. He founded Saint Francis Country Home for Convalescents. He also founded Saint Edmond’s Home for Crippled Children.
In 2005 the Archdiocese decided to merge the administration of both schools. In 2012 it was announced that both schools would close. However alumni and supporters raised 1.11 million dollars in 13 days. This saved the schools.
Today Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School continues to educate students. The school is known for its commitment to Catholic values. It provides a comprehensive education.
The mascot of Bonner is the Friar. The mascot of Prendie is the Panda. They represent the proud traditions of both schools.
Alumni have made their mark in various fields. Isaiah Wong plays basketball for the Indiana Pacers. Many other graduates have excelled in sports arts and public service.
