Imagine Lord Indra pacing anxiously. He entrusted his divine cow Kamadhenu to Sage Vashishta long ago. Now, she hasn’t returned.

Welcome to the Arulmigu Karaneeswarar Temple. It is an ancient Hindu temple in Chennai’s Saidapet neighborhood dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s history is entwined with a fascinating legend.

Indra discovered Kamadhenu was cursed. She became an ordinary cow. She had disrupted Sage Vashishta’s prayers. Indra consulted his Ganas. He learned redemption was possible. He must build a Shiva temple between Mylapore and Thiruvanmiyur. It should be in the northwestern direction.

Indra commanded the clouds to create rain. A lush pasture emerged. He installed a Linga. He prayed to Lord Shiva. Shiva freed Kamadhenu from the curse. He blessed Indra. He granted him the title of Gopathi. Gopathi means Lord of Cows. The tank Indra created is Gopathi Saras. Taking a ritual bath here on full moon days is said to cure illnesses.

The Arulmigu Karaneeswarar Temple boasts a seven-story Gopuram. It has two prakarams. These are closed temple precincts. A beautiful tank enhances the temple’s charm. Shrines for Ganesha and Karthikeya are present. The Dwajasthamba leads to Lord Vedagiriswara’s shrine. The main shrine houses Lord Karaneeswara and Goddess Swarnambika.

Inside the inner precinct are idols of Dakshinamoorthy and Nayanmars. Separate shrines honor Palani Andavar, Virabhadra and Surya. A garden graces the temple grounds. The tank’s steps feature a standing Ganesha with consorts Siddhi and Buddhi.

The Arulmigu Karaneeswarar Temple comes alive during festivals. Pradhosham days draw large crowds. The annual ten-day Brahmotsavam occurs in the Tamil month of Chithirai. During Chitirai thirvizha, devotees flock here. Spiritual talks on Thiruvasagam tell of Lord Shiva. Shiv Rathri sees the temple beautifully decorated.

“Karaneeswar” means “Lord of the Cause”. It emphasizes Shiva as the ultimate cause. The temple’s Dravidian architecture showcases its antiquity. Goddess Swarnaambigai joins Karaneeswarar. The Arulmigu Karaneeswarar Temple hosts Maha Shivaratri and Navaratri. Panguni Uthiram also attracts many devotees.

Remember the legend of Indra and Kamadhenu as you leave. The Arulmigu Karaneeswarar Temple stands as a testament to faith. Its rich history and vibrant celebrations continue to inspire.
