Seven heads dance in the breeze. Here, at the Skulptur Begegnung by Wolfgang Schlieker, you’re witnessing more than just a sculpture. You’re experiencing a conversation between art and the elements. The Skulptur Begegnung, located on the traffic circle near the Castrop-Rauxel train station, commands attention. The sculpture’s name, “Encounter,” perfectly reflects its setting near the Forum-Komplex and Westfälisches Landestheater. It’s a place where paths cross and stories intertwine. The sculpture features seven basalt heads, a number Schlieker himself called “biblical,” connected by stainless steel bands. They sway and shift with the wind, sometimes reaching outwards, other times drawing close, as if in constant dialogue. The artist, Wolfgang Schlieker, intended this kinetic element, encouraging interaction and adding another layer to the concept of “encounter”. He famously said about his kinetic works, “Touching is explicitly allowed.” The Skulptur Begegnung was a gift to the city, on loan from Schlieker. It’s meant to complement another of Schlieker’s creations, “Europa,” located nearby and representing the city’s partner cities. This makes the Skulptur Begegnung not just an artistic statement, but a symbol of connection and exchange.
