Founded in 1908 TuS Vahrenwald 08 boasts a rich history. Initially an offshoot of the Freie Turnerschaft Hannover it served the Vahrenwald district. By 1920 TuS Vahrenwald 08 had its own sports facility near the Vahrenwald water tower. Handball and Faustball joined the existing gymnastics program. The name changed in 1928 to Verein fur Sport und Korperpflege Vahrenwald. Sadly the Nazi regime banned the club in 1933 confiscating its assets. Undeterred TuS Vahrenwald 08 was reborn in 1948. It registered under its current name. For over a decade starting in 1951 it used a makeshift field near Helmkestrafe in Hainholz. A new facility on Sahlkamp opened in 1963. The club also uses municipal gyms. TuS Vahrenwald 08 achieved remarkable success in regional and national competitions since the 1970s. Members won numerous German and state championships in korfball. The men’s baseball team reached the first Bundesliga in 1995 and 2006. In April 2009 TuS Vahrenwald 08 received the Federal President’s Sports Badge. The club’s success extends beyond team sports. Gabi Dreyer Bettina Lehmann and Nicole Kruger won multiple gold medals in trampolining at European and World Championships starting in 1983. Their achievements alongside Frank and Bettina Lehmann are featured in Niedersachsen sporthistorisch. TuS Vahrenwald 08 endures as a vital part of Hannover’s sporting heritage a testament to perseverance and athletic excellence. Today it offers 16 sports and leisure activities to approximately 1000 members. It’s Hanover’s only baseball team. Its story is one of resilience triumph and community spirit.
