In 1601, a victorious Toyotomi Hideyoshi sought to unify Japan’s silver currency. He established the Fushimi Ginza, Japan’s first silver mint, right here in Fushimi. This Fushimi Ginza Stele marks the boundary of this important site. The mint was more than just a place to produce coins. It was a bustling hub, complete with offices and residences for workers. Imagine the activity here, the clang of hammers shaping silver into currency. The Fushimi Ginza Stele stands as a testament to this early economic activity. Hideyoshi’s vision extended beyond currency. He aimed to control silver production nationwide. This mint played a crucial role. The Fushimi Ginza operated here for several years before moving to Kyoto in 1608. It later became the Kyoto Ginza. The stele, originally located 100 meters south, was moved to its current location in 1970. It stands not just as a marker, but as a portal. A portal to a time when Fushimi played a key role in shaping Japan’s financial landscape. The Fushimi Ginza Stele is a silent witness to Hideyoshi’s ambition and the birth of a unified currency system.
