Imagine East Los Angeles in 1958. Bishop Mora Salesian High School emerges as a beacon of hope. Cardinal James Francis McIntyre entrusted the Salesians of Don Bosco with nurturing faith in Boyle Heights.

This all-boys Roman Catholic high school opened its doors. It offered college prep business general education and shop programs. Bishop Mora Salesian High School quickly became known for its strong shop programs. Printing drafting woodworking and electronics thrived here.

The student body mirrored the neighborhood’s diversity. Latinos African-Americans Japanese-Americans Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans walked these halls together. As communities changed the school’s ethnic makeup evolved too. Today Bishop Mora Salesian High School is 96% Latino and 98% Catholic.

The early 1970s brought changes. Bishop Mora Salesian High School shifted its focus discontinuing shop and business programs. Resources flowed into college preparatory studies. Enrollment soared in the late 60s and early 70s reaching almost one thousand students. Salesian brothers and priests led the faculty.

The 1980s presented challenges. Catholic high schools faced declining enrollment and fewer religious personnel. Bishop Mora Salesian High School felt the strain too. Closure rumors spread as enrollment dipped. In 1988 the Salesians of Don Bosco withdrew from administration. Lay principals stepped in for the next three years.

But hope returned in 1992. The Salesians reaffirmed their support. They reestablished ties with Bishop Mora Salesian High School and the Archdiocese. The school embraced the Salesian Preventive System of Education. A lay principal familiar with Don Bosco’s spirit would lead. A Salesian presence remained ensuring the school’s mission continued.

An Advisory Board formed to guide strategic planning. Fundraising efforts boosted tuition assistance. In 1998 the John and Dorothy Shea Foundation granted $7 million. New academic athletic and multi-purpose facilities rose on the campus. Cardinal Roger Mahoney dedicated these facilities in 2002. The statue of St. John Bosco reclaimed its honored place.

Bishop Mora Salesian High School boasts strong sports programs. Baseball basketball cross country football and soccer are among them. The Mustangs have clinched CIFSS championships in multiple sports. Soccer teams have earned CIF State Titles. In 2002 new sports facilities opened enriching the athletic experience.

Today Bishop Mora Salesian High School thrives. It operates on a college preparatory track. The school serves diverse students staying true to St. John Bosco’s vision. The campus hosts community events and provides facilities for local organizations. Bishop Mora Salesian High School remains a vital part of Boyle Heights.

Alumni remember the school’s profound impact. They value the friendships and guidance they received. Bishop Mora Salesian High School instilled perseverance and a drive to succeed. Graduates like Jose Sandoval and David Gonzalez credit the school for their achievements.
